A New Season Begins Dear NCCU Family and Friends, With heartfelt gratitude and deep Eagle pride, I am honored to serve as President of the North Carolina Central University Alumni Association – Durham Chapter. This new season brings with it a renewed sense of purpose—one grounded in service, unity, and collective impact. But this moment is not just about my commitment to serve—it’s about our commitment. Each of us has a role to play in advancing the mission of our chapter and uplifting the legacy of North Carolina Central University. Together, we are serving our students, our alumni, and the greater Durham community. We are mentoring future Eagles, creating opportunities, and preserving the rich history that connects us all. Dr. Karrie G. Dixon became the 13th chancellor of North Carolina Central University on July 1, 2024, following her election by the UNC Board of Governors. She made history as the first woman to serve as chancellor at two UNC System institutions, previously leading Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) from 2018 to 2024. At ECSU, she played a transformative role in revitalizing the university and advancing its mission, having first served as interim chancellor and co-led major operational reforms. With over 15 years of higher education leadership experience, Dr. Dixon has been a cornerstone of the University of North Carolina System since 2008. As vice president for Academic and Student Affairs, she oversaw all 17 institutions, guiding system-wide policies that strengthened student success, access, and retention. Her efforts created key collaborations among the UNC System, community colleges, and state education agencies, leading to major initiatives such as the College Foundation of North Carolina (CFNC) Pathways and programs supporting transfer and military students. Before joining the UNC System, Dr. Dixon served at North Carolina State University as assistant vice provost and continues to mentor aspiring leaders as an adjunct assistant professor in higher education. Her leadership extends nationally, with service on the boards of AASCU, SACSCOC, Campus Compact, and the Women in Aviation Advisory Board. She is also a founding member of the Black Women Collegiate Presidents and Chancellors. Dr. Dixon’s distinguished career has earned her numerous honors, including the Old North State Award, the William C. Friday Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award. Recognized among the “Ten Most Dominant HBCU Leaders” and the “Black Business Ink Power 100,” she continues to exemplify excellence and service in higher education. A proud graduate of North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Dr. Dixon is also a devoted mother of two daughters.
